Forged from the materials found on Piggy Island and powered by energon, each one has a different power of varying usefulness.

Energonicons come into play once the player has uncovered Hogs Head Mountain on the map, home of Professor Pig and the Pig Lab. Upon entering, Prof. Pig presents you with three already-complete Energonicons: Strikebot, Electroblast and Shieldor. From that point on though, any more Energonicons must be made via Professor Pig's ridiculous-looking contraption.
The machine is activated by feeding it three of one type of Energon Crystal. This starts up a roulette-style game of chance, with five different potential prizes, up to two being a random Energonicon of the same rarity, and the rest being one crystal of a rarity one rank higher than the rarity used. Naturally, the more rare the Energon Crystal, the more rare the resulting Energonicons are. Gems can of course be spent to reject the outcome and try again with the remaining prizes, with the Gem price starting at 5 and doubling every time you try it. You cannot get an Energonicon twice even if you use the same crystal rarity, only unobtained Energonicons will be available. If you have already unlocked all Energonicons of the rarity, you can choose how many crystals to put into the machine in multiples of three, with the result guaranteed to be crystals of the next rarity, the quantity being same number divided by 3.
Once obtained, an Energonicon starts at Grade 1, letting it hold a single Energon Cube (which we'll get to shortly). You can spend a combination of Crystals and Coins to upgrade each Energonicon two times, which increases its Cube capacity by 1 each time. When you select a map node or start a new competition run, you are given the chance to select an Energonicon... however, higher-rarity Energonicons are not available to lower-level characters! Upgrade your characters to give them access to the more powerful tools.
In the runs, Energonicons float behind the player and remain inactive until you press the Energonicon icon, and only if they have at least one stored energon cube, obtained by de-cyberforming scenery (by blasting it) however combiners cannot use Energonicons but in 2 character levels swapping to a combiner after using a character with a Energonicon can give them it. Activating an Energonicon immediately drains all stored energon, and the amount of energon alters the effect: while most Energonicons simply stay active longer, others grow in power without changing duration. Any energon cubes obtained while storage is full gets you nothing but a disparaging look from your chosen character, so it's usually best to go ahead and activate once it looks like you might go over.
Most Energonicons replicate the attacks of the playable characters and even some enemies, but others have more esoteric functions. Which one to use depends on who you're bringing into the stage and what you're trying to accomplish.
Prior to the March 2020 overhaul, Energonicons were made using Materials (which have since been removed from the game), and their Energon Cube storage was dictated by the level of the character being used. Currently it is unknown exactly how the unlocking process works, as the current editors have already unlocked all the Energonicons before the major update.
